What Is Erb's Palsy?
One type of birth injury that can have devastating effects on the life of a child and their family is Erb's palsy. Also known as Erb-Duchenne Palsy, this condition causes paralysis in the arm. The nerves in the upper part of the arm are known as the brachial plexus.
When a portion of the brachial plexus is damaged due to a difficult labor or delivery, the result could be paralysis. The reason why difficult labor could cause this serious condition is that the child's neck and head and shoulders could be wrenched in directions they should not go.
