According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), drunk driving accidents account for nearly 30% of all traffic fatalities in the United States each year. In fact, it is estimated that someone dies in a drunk driving crash every 50 minutes. The West Virginia Alcohol Beverage Control Administration is offering a DUI Simulator Program to participating high schools.
Our Local Community Is Educating Students on the Risks of Drunk Driving
Wheeling Park High School took action to combat the dangers of drunk driving and recently hosted a two-day program where more than 100 students participated. The course prompted discussions on the risks of drunk and drugged driving, as well as the risk of texting while driving. Alcohol has several negative effects on the human body. These include blurred vision, decrease in muscle coordination, dizziness, and inability to make quick judgments.
During the course, students got behind the wheel of the simulator, which gradually increased the effects of alcohol as displayed on the screen. As the effects of alcohol grew worse, the participants found it harder and harder to navigate. Many made serious mistakes, such as hitting pedestrians, buildings, road signs, or animals.
Teaching High School Students the Dangers of Drunk Driving Is Important
As these students become old enough to drive, it is important to give them a tangible experience they will remember. Classroom lectures and PowerPoint slides may be effective to communicate information. However, the goal of the DUI Simulator Program is to give students something different they can actively participate in. The simulator provides a first-hand experience of drunk driving, and it is a clear warning of the dangers of getting behind the wheel while intoxicated. Students are urged to call parents to pick them up if they are unable to drive safely.
