Bob Fitzsimmons represented former NFL Hall of Famer Mike Webster in establishing
permanent disability as a result of brain injuries sustained from football-related
activities. He has co-authored another medical research paper on chronic
traumatic encephalopathy ("CTE"). The study reported the findings
from using [F-18] FDDNP PET scan to detect brain patterns of neuropathology
distribution in fourteen (14) retired professional football players with
suspected CTE and compared those results with twenty-eight (28) patients
who were cognitively intact and served as the controls, as well as a comparison
to twenty-four (24) patients with Alzheimer's dementia. The research
indicated that the FDDNP PET imaging pattern in cases of suspected CTE
was primarily consistent with PHF-Tau distribution observed at autopsy
in subjects with a history of mild traumatic brain injury ("TBI")
and autopsy confirmed the diagnosis of CTE. The journal article was published
online on April 6, 2015 by the
Proceedings of the National Academy of Science,
E2039-E2047.
